The Australian Labradoodle is known for its calm disposition and friendly personality, as well as its intelligence and adaptability.

They can be large, like the Labrador Retriever or Standard Poodle, or smaller like the Miniature Poodle. They come in many different colours, including spotted (parti) and masked (phantom). The coat is soft and somewhat shaggy, with a fleece or wool texture. They are an athletic dog with fine proportions. Despite their athleticism, they don’t necessarily require huge amounts of activity and are unlikely to destroy your house if not taken on long walks multiple times a day! As such, the Australian Labradoodle – and particularly the miniature variety – is well suited to city life, even life in an apartment or house with a small yard. That being said, they definitely do enjoy long walks and free runs in the dog park. In general, they are very tolerant with small children. This makes them ideal family pets.

The Australian Labradoodle is particularly known as an allergy-friendly dog. Some call it “hypo-allergenic,” which is an exaggeration. There is no such thing as a “hypo-allergenic” dog, but the lack of an undercoat means they do not shed, or shed only minimally. It is the dander on the skin that most people are allergic to, not the hair, but flecks or skin are usually attached to the hair that is shed, therefore the lack of shedding means next to no skin flecks are present in the environment. This makes the Australian Labradoodle generally very compatible with people who suffer from pet allergies or asthma, as there is little or nothing to provoke an allergic reaction. (People who are allergic to the dog’s saliva will, unfortunately, not benefit from the lack of shedding and will still react when the dog licks them.)

As a breed, the Australian Labradoodle is a mix of three foundation breeds: Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel. This distinguishes it from the “ordinary” Labradoodle (sometimes also called “American Labradoodle”), which is a mix of only Labrador Retriever and Poodle.
